Hi, My name is Tricia ... For those of you who have followed some of my articles and blog posts, or on my Twitter account... know that I've had a heck of a time with my attempts to lower my blood sugar and have healthy glucose levels.
Today I'll quickly go over what has worked best for me - diet, exercise and supplements. You can learn from my mistakes, save yourself time and money and hopefully get similar results. I lowered my glucose levels by 37 pts in 8 weeks. Although results may vary for you - depending on your goals and overall efforts, but what I'll share with you is not hard to do at all...
Before I get started, I want to let you know that my doctor's first advice was "improve your diet and let's start you with a prescription glucose lowering drug"
I quickly said "no thanks, I want to do it naturally because my sister-in-law has been on that exact medication and she feels HORRIBLE all the time"... And I'm glad I did, because everything worked out at the end.
So, if you've been told the same (you need to take a drug) or maybe you're already taking one, there is hope - so don't worry.
The Best All-Around Diet
So, over the past couple of years I've tried lots of different diets, as I'm sure you have also. I'd like to say "I've tried them all", but... there are so many of them. But, the one that worked best for improving my blood sugar levels was a "Paleoletic" Diet:
Summary: It was a big change from my typical diet, but after about a month, my glucose levels were 7 pts lower with the blood test. So, even though I needed more of an improvement, it was a step in the right direction. Plus, I lost about 4 lbs too... :-)
Exercise - What's the best?
I know everyone says to do "lots of cardio" to lose weight and improve your blood sugar, but that didn't work so much for me. Running all the time just ended up making me lose fat AND muscle, so I started to look flabby and squishy/soft. I had no "shape". So, long story short - here's what I do now:
Doing both weights and walking has really helped "tone" me up, as I lose the fat. The combination is much more powerful than doing just cardio alone. And NO, I didn't "bulk up" or anything like that. I still look very feminine =)
Summary: Exercise (both resistance and cardio) helps improve "insulin sensitivity" and therefore, less insulin is secreted -- which means lower glucose levels. Plus, losing weight helps improve blood sugar levels too.
The Big Problem - Results Stopped!!!
All the above was great - I felt and looked better, plus my blood sugar levels had improved and my total glucose levels were 11 pts lower. It wasn't "amazing", but at least it was positive news.
But, my doctor insisted on the drugs again because he said "you need to lower it MORE, at least 10-15 more pts". I didn't know what else to do - all the "dieting" and exercise was a LOT of work as it was. I got a bit hopeless again...
